When you think of or see a padlock, you usually think of security. This is why websites that feature secure transactions use the image of a padlock icon so the user is aware that their transaction is in fact secure.
A padlock consists of 3 parts: the body, the shackle and a locking mechanism. Combination padlocks have an entirely different composition, consisting of wheels that when aligned together to the correct code, it unlocks.
Interestingly, the first evidence of padlocks can be traced as far back to the Roman Era, 500 BC - 300AD! Since then, padlocks have evolved throughout history, becoming more secure, economical and sophisticated.
The components of a traditional padlock , as mentioned earlier, consist of a body, shackle and locking mechanism. The shackle is usually a "U" shaped piece of metal that hooks on to what is being secured (ie a chain or a locker door). Some shackles are designed to come apart and then come back together to lock and unlock.
The combination padlock is different to the traditional padlock, in that it doesn't require keys. The combination of numbers must be entered in the correct sequence for the lock to unlock. Small discs, or "cams" as they are also known as, feature a tooth on each side and as these teetch match up, the cams rotate which enables the hasp can be released. Again, the earliest combination padlock was discovered in the Roman Era, in a tomb in Athens. It featured small dials instead of keyholes.
